The drilling rig
Oil extraction begins with drilling.
Let’s go!
Feel the Arctic
Messoyakha is far beyond the Arctic Circle. It snow-clad for eight months a year, and winter temperatures plummet to -50 Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit)

Find the treasure trove
140 million years ago, there was a tropical sea here instead of today’s tundra forest. Messoyakha’s future oil formed here.

Discovering the oil
One can reach Messoyakha’s oil only by utilizing advanced drilling technologies.

Digging things up
Fishbone wells resemble a fish skeleton. There are 161 of them at Messoyakha so far, and the largest one has nine “ribs.”

Leaving no trace!
Oil workers move around the tundra on Trekoles – six-wheeled land rovers. They don’t damage the thin, vulnerable Arctic soils.

The oil collection center
The oil comes from wells here.
Let’s fly to them!
Slowing down on the gas
Firstly, natural gas is separated from oil. It is pumped into an underground storage – and there are more than 1.5 billion cubic meters (53 billion cubic feet) of it there already.

Removing the water
To separate water from oil, the crude is heated up in giant stoves to the temperature of warm tea – 54 Celsius (130 F)

Discharging the ballast
The oil is purified in several stages. On the way to perfection, it traverses more than 50 kilometers (31 miles) through a pipeline labyrinth.

Gaining weight
Within 24 hours, some 15,000 tons of oil are ready for departure.

The lab
The Messoyakha oil is multi-colored. Wanna know why?
Gotta get here!
Testing one’s character
In the chemical laboratory, the oil goes through hundreds of tests every day. It is tested according to top quality standards.

To underline a color
Oil from various layers of the well can be colored orange, dark-green and black. The color depends on tars.

Customizing the setup
The operation of the entire oil field is based on oil test results

The oil pipeline
Consumer-ready oil is rushed towards the mainland.
Deer on the horizon!
A second birth
Messoyakha oil workers have restored hundreds of hectares (acres) of polluted soil around Soviet-era exploration drilling sites.

Towards the target
The oil reaches its consumers at the speed of 3.4 kilometers (2 miles) per hour. In the past five years, more than 23,000 million tons have been delivered.

Hovering above ground
The oil pipeline stands at 2–3 meters (6.5 – 10 feet) above ground. A real safety cushion for permafrost.

Living in harmony
There are dozens of deer herders’ camps in Messoyakha. Oil workers designed special gates for the animals – the oil pipeline has 14 deer passages.

Looking into the future
The total area of the Messoyakha oil fields is 7,200 square kilometers (1,8 million acres). Only a tenth has been explored. Plenty of discoveries ahead!
